Birke: Wird auf Grund des Flammenbildes sehr gerne für offene Kamine genutzt. Brennt schneller ab als Buche, erzeugt jedoch eine bläuliche Flamme.
Fichte: Günstiges Brennholz welches auf Grund des hohen Harzgehaltes nicht für den offenen Kamin geeignet ist. Es brennt schnell ab und eignet sich mehr für Holzvergaser.
Pappel und Weide: Sind vom Brennwert dem Nadelholz gleich zu setzen. geringe Energiedichte und schnell abbrennend.
Esche: Vereint die Vorzüge von Buche und Birke. Es bietet einen hohen Heizwert und erzeugt ein schönes Flammenbild. Da es wenig Funkenflug bildet eignet es sich für offene Kamine.
Tanne: Sie brennt ähnlich schnell wie Fischte, bildet aber wesentlich weniger Funkenflug. Im Alpenraum der Brennstoff schlechthin.
Maßeinheiten:
1 Raummeter: ist ein Kubikmeter geschichtetes Holz. Entspricht circa 0,7Festmetern
1 Festmeter: ist ein Kubikmeter Holz ohne Zwischenräume. wird aus der Länge und Dicke des Holzes vorm spalten berechnet.
1 Schüttraummeter (SRM): auf dem ersten Blick oft billig. Aber: Die Scheite werden geschüttet und nicht gestapelt. Es bleibt viel Luft dazwischen. circa 0,68 bis 0,89 Raummeter.
